THEO JAKARTA는 2025년 5월 17일부터 6월 15일까지 마셀로 수아즈나바 작가의 개인전인 『Imaginary Creatures』을 개최합니다.

존재를 상상한다는 것은 무엇을 의미할까요?

그저 허구의 생명체를 창조하는 것을 넘어, 두려움과 부드러움, 믿음과 기억을 하나의 형상 안에 담아내는 일입니다.

이번 전시 Imaginary Creatures에서 볼리비아 작가 마르셀로 수아스나바르는 개인적이고 문화적인 경험의 깊은 샘에서 끌어올린 감각으로 낯설고도 친밀한 존재들을 만들어냅니다.

이 존재들은 신화에도, 과학에도 존재하지 않습니다.

기억과 상상의 틈 사이에서 모습을 드러낸 이들은 세밀한 묘사와 초현실적인 시선 아래, 인간과 동물의 혼종, 가면을 쓴 기수, 주시하는 유령, 몽환적인 동반자로 나타납니다.

이들은 라틴 아메리카의 가톨릭 상징성과 안데스의 민속적 정서를 떠올리게 하면서도, 어느 하나로 명확히 정의되기를 거부합니다.

이번 전시는 THEO와 수아스나바르의 두 번째 협업이자, 작가의 인도네시아 첫 전시입니다.

자카르타에서 선보이는 이번 작품들을 통해, 우리는 그의 생생한 내면 신화를 소개하는 동시에,

그의 세계와 동남아시아의 상징적 결들을 이어주는 대화를 제안하고자 합니다.

Imaginary Creatures는 별개의 세계가 아닙니다.

우리가 두려워하고, 사랑하며, 기억하고, 상상해낸 존재들이 조용히 모습을 드러내는 거울 같은 공간입니다.

THEO JAKARTA will host Marcelo Suaznabar‘s solo exhibition titled 『Imaginary Creatures』 from May 17 to June 15 2025.

What does it mean to imagine a creature?

Not just to create a fictional being, but to embody fear, tenderness, belief, and memory in a single form.

In Imaginary Creatures, Bolivian artist Marcelo Suaznabar draws from a deep well of personal and cultural experience to give shape to beings that are at once strange and intimate.

These creatures do not exist in myth, nor in science—they emerge from between the folds of memory and invention.

Marked by meticulous detail and a surrealist gaze, Suaznabar’s paintings are populated by hybrid figures: human-animal hybrids, masked riders, watchful ghosts, and dreamlike companions.

They recall Latin American Catholic symbolism and Andean folklore, but they resist clear categorization.

This exhibition marks THEO’s second collaboration with Suaznabar, and his first in Indonesia.

In presenting these works in Jakarta, we are not only offering a glimpse into the artist’s vivid inner mythology,

but also proposing a conversation between his world and the symbolic textures of Southeast Asia.

“Imaginary Creatures” is not a world apart—it is a mirror.

A place where the creatures we fear, love, remember, or invent come gently into view.
