THEO will hold Woojin Kim’s solo exhibition 『SIGNATURE』 from June 3rd to June 30th, 2022.
Pause for a second and look at your knuckles. The pattern of winding ridges never changes throughout life. As such, fingerprints are unique and retain their original form even when new cells grow. Life in time, and in the midst of the ever-changing appearance of the body never changes.
Now, let’s imagine that we are entering a large exhibition hall, a gallery. It is a mix of works and worlds in a variety of mediums and styles. At this time, we find animals that are much larger than humans, emitting brilliant colors in a lofty posture. Intense primary colors such as red and blue, yellow and green, and various animal figures are indicators of Kim Woo-jin’s works. This is because he maintains a strong identity even though he has been continuously active in his work for over ten years. So far, his artistic fingerprints are the combination of primary colors and coloring methods that he has, and his unique animal figures.
Artist Woojin Kim has explored the essence of utopia regardless of genre or material. The primary-colored animals he creates on his journey to utopia are infinitely transformed in material properties, textures, shapes, and colors. The meaning of the work was strengthened by exploring things such as rubber basins and discarded plastic chairs scattered in the vacant lot as materials, or attempting to connect the meaning inherent in these materials and the world of art. In this way, the artist has gone through several bold attempts without hesitation in the process of exploration. For example, plastic, a material that was mainly used to reinforce the durability of the work, was replaced with a stainless unit. This was done with the solidity of the work in mind, but on the other hand, the material properties of stainless steel created a strong energy different from the existing plastic in the animal shape. In addition, by adding various colors and expressions, we have moved to a more mature color rather than the primary color unique to ready-made plastic products.
The world of Woojin Kim’s works has changed in a variety of ways based on the unchanging foundation, that is, the artistic fingerprint. In short, Woojin Kim’s signature is a common element that can be seen everywhere in his works, giving a clear, cohesive and unchanging identity in the midst of transformation, that is, creative freedom. This creative freedom enables artists to experiment and change within challenges even when they are free from simple repetition. Therefore, the signature of artist Kim Woo-jin is that the exterior expands and the interior becomes more solid as the work process accumulates.
The artistic balance he seeks is a balance within the flexibility of a reed that contracts and expands while maintaining an artistic fingerprint—a signature—regardless of the genre or medium chosen. The new works in this exhibition, which focus on artistic balance and creative freedom, have experimented with reducing formativeness and adding flatness to his art world, while the range of materials is further expanded to include aluminum. And, through this exhibition, the audience will experience another attempt by Woojin Kim, which will still be seen in ‘variety’, and explore the artist’s signature once again.
