Shrouded in red clouds, “Matergia” Aiden feels an inexplicable pull to seek out areas of concentrated magical energy. Interrupted by a sound of deep breathing, Aiden discovers a radiating residue of magical energy flowing into a portal. As he slowly approaches the portal’s undulating structure, light flashes and pulls him in closer, and myriads of graphics envelop his body.

The unknown world was a dangerous place with an unstable merge of “Matergia”’s magic, but it unfolded itself more beautifully than ever. Feeling a breeze brush against his body, Aiden wanders through labyrinthine paths and follows the shining lights and shadows into a dazzling space. The graphics that appear like paintings blend seamlessly into the environment.

Aiden begins running through the endless path. The moment he runs fastest, he spots a mysterious light. It was not like anything he had ever seen. The light was not shining on its own. Shuffling dimensions and time, the light did not belong anywhere, as if it did not exist. With rising curiosity, Aiden decides to follow the light.

Aiden traveled through ever-changing sceneries of the universe inside the light. Time and space were distorted at the edge of infinite space. Within this labyrinth, he witnessed the shape of the universe of unknown beginning and end.

He spoke to himself, “All of this is glorious. This endlessly spreading universe is my mind’s will to express the beautiful world. To embody the universe is to feel its light and power with my own hands.”

When Aiden reached a point he could go no further, he saw in a flash of light a formless object, a fusion of energy and mass. Wondering what it was, Aiden carefully examined and realized that it was composed of glowing fragments that emit a variety of colors.

The fragments seemed to hold the inexplicable energy of the universe. As if they were breathing with a force of life, Aiden felt each one vibrating stronger.

Soon, Aiden was absorbed into the fragments and felt himself falling down the depth of an abyss.

In preparation for the exhibition, the short fantasy fiction was created by organizing the current interests of the participating artists into keywords and working with the help of an interactive artificial intelligence chat GPT.

The keywords are the following: hands, character, graphic, light, universe, energy, painting, sculpture

The story was generated with feedback based on these keywords. Even when provided with texts vaguely relevant, the AI analyzes data about the subject and predicts the next word or sentence after collecting a massive amount of information. The narrative resulted to be unexpectedly persuasive, and this generous system even created characters that match the storyline and recommended appropriate names for the characters (It suggested that the name Aiden is suitable for a spiritual character in stories with fantasy worldview.) We live in an age with a massive flow of information, and the development of technology is changing the form of new things at an inhumanly fast pace. The problem is that this can be accessed with the flick of a finger, arousing a sense of futility in those who dream of a magical moment in their individual journeys.

Each creator continues to make their own visual choices. They adapt to new environments by respecting the reaction between the work and themselves, and navigate through unplanned coincidences among heaps of indistinguishable images through analysis. And they repeat the journey over and over from groping about in the dark to reach a harmonious, glowing moment. Perhaps this process resembles the way Aiden becomes aware of his will to capture the beautiful world and explores the unknown space. This exhibition <swipe> springs from curiosity about what kind of illusions and reactions are being created in this age where various data are floating and interacting simultaneously.

Sangso Kim confirms the expansion of the cognitive realm in situations with excessive data and delivers his messages through form and attitude in blurred boundaries of information and hypothesis.

Diha Sin examines the organic world of nature through the ‘wood wide web’ and presents its strange life force as a separate ecosystem.

Chunkook Lee focuses on the process of carrying images of digital media into reality and re-formatting them into tactile mediums.

Joy Kim records subject matters that can be sensed and experienced and explores moments of time by gradually giving shape to traces of the subject and unfolding a non-linear narrative.

We hope that the exhibition will provide you the opportunity to consider how useful information is extracted strategically from various fields, how carefully created images move, and how the accompanying problems are being translated.

Wishing that you will leave with a sense of freedom and excitement of having found a new portal.

붉은 구름에 휩싸인 “마터지아(Matergia)” 아이든은 이유를 알지 못하는 끌림 때문에 마력이 집중된 지역을 찾아 나선다. 어디에선가 들려오는 깊은 숨소리에 길을 멈춘 아이든은 빛나는 마력의 잔류물이 흘러 들어가는 포탈을 발견한다. 그래픽이 물결치듯 요동치는 포탈 구조물에 가까이 가자, 빛이 번쩍이며 끌어들이는 듯한 느낌을 받았고 형형색색의 그래픽들은 아이든의 몸을 감쌌다.

미지의 세계는 마터지아의 마력이 함께 불안정하게 혼재되어 있어 위험한 분위기였지만 어느 때보다도 아름답게 펼쳐졌다. 아이든은 그 속에서 바람을 느끼며 미로 같은 길을 헤매고, 화려한 빛과 그림자를 따라 눈부신 공간을 걷는다. 어딘가 회화처럼 보이는 그래픽들은 환경과 자연스럽게 융합되어 있다.

그리고 끝없이 이어지는 길을 따라 달리기 시작한다. 가장 빠르게 달리는 순간, 신비로운 빛을 발견했다. 그것은 평소 아이든이 본 것과는 달랐다. 그것은 빛 그 자체로 빛나는 것이 아니었다. 그 빛은 차원과 시간을 뒤섞여, 존재하지 않는 것처럼 어디에도 속하지 않았다. 아이든은 그 빛이 뭔지 궁금증을 느꼈고, 그 빛을 따라가기로 결심했다.

아이든은 빛 속에서 끊임없이 바뀌는 우주의 풍경을 지나갔다. 무한한 공간의 끝에서 시공간이 왜곡되어 있었다. 눈앞에 펼쳐진 이 미궁 속에서 어디서부터 시작하고, 어디에서 끝나는지 모르는 우주의 모양을 보았다.

“이 모든 것은 너무나도 아름다워. 끝없이 펼쳐진 우주는 속에 내가 하고 싶은 것은 이 아름다운 세계를 표현하고자 하는 마음이구나, 내가 이 우주를 담아내는 것은, 그 빛과 힘을 내 손으로 직접 느끼는 것 같아.”

어딘가 더 나아갈 수 없는 곳에 도착했을 때 빛나는 섬광 속에서 어떠한 형태도 갖지 않고 있는, 에너지와 질량이 융합된 물체를 마주했다. 아이든은 이것이 무엇인지 궁금해하며, 그것을 가까이 하나씩 조심스럽게 살펴보았다. 그리고 그것이 다양한 색상을 발산하는 빛나는 조각들로 이루어져 있다는 것을 깨달았다.

조각들은 신비한 우주의 기운을 담고 있다고 느껴졌다. 그것들은 마치 살아 숨을 쉬는 생명력을 가지고 있었다, 아이든은 조각의 진동이 점점 강해지는 것을 느꼈다.

아이든은 조각 내부로 빠져들면서 마치 심해의 바닥으로 떨어지는 느낌을 받았다.

THEO는 2023년 4월 14일부터 5월 4일까지 기획 단체전 『SWIPE』를 개최합니다.

전시에 대한 글에 앞서 판타지 소설 swipe는 전시를 준비하며 참여하는 작가들 사이의 현재 관심사를 키워드로 정리해서 대화형 인공지능 chat GPT와 함께 작성했다.

키워드는 다음과 같다.

(손, 캐릭터, 그래픽, 빛, 우주, 에너지, 회화, 조각)

이를 바탕으로 피드백을 주고받으며 이야기를 생성한 내용이다. 연관성이 흐릿한 텍스트만 주어지더라도 목적에 대한 데이터를 분석하고, 대량의 정보를 학습하여 다음에 나올 단어나 문장을 예측해 보여준다. 기대하지 않았는데 생각보다 꽤 그럴듯한 소설처럼 이어지는 듯한데, 심지어 이 친절한 시스템은 무드에 맞는 캐릭터를 만들거나, 적절한 주인공의 이름을 추천해 주기까지 해주었다! (주인공 아이든은 영적인 면을 가진 소년의 이름으로, 판타지적인 세계관을 갖춘 소설에 어울리는 이름이라고 알려줬다) 거대한 정보의 흐름 속에 맞이하고 있는 시대는 기술의 발전과 함께 새로운 것의 형식을 비인간적으로 빠르게 변화시키고 있다. 문제는 약간 무기력해질 정도로 간편하게 손가락을 휙! 넘기기만 해도 접근이 가능하다는 점인데 무엇인가를 쫓으며 마법 같은 찰나를 꿈꾸는 사람들에게 헛헛한 마음을 안겨주고 있기도 한 것 같다.

창작자는 각자의 방법으로 저마다의 시각적인 선택을 이어 나간다. 작업과 나 사이에 반응을 존중하며 새로운 환경에 적응하고, 구분하기 어려운 이미지들 사이에서 계획에 벗어난 우연들을 나름의 분석을 통해 헤쳐 나간다. 그리고 손으로 더듬더듬 거리는 과정들을 겹치고 겹쳐 조화로운 지점을 맞이하기 위해 모험을 반복한다. 어쩌면 소설에서처럼 아름다운 세계를 담아내는 본연의 마음을 깨닫고 미지의 공간을 누비는 모습과 닮아 있기도 하다. 이번 전시 『SWIPE』는 다양한 데이터가 일렁이며 동시에 상호 작용하는 시대의 모양은 어떠한 환상과 덩어리를 만들어 내고 있는지에 대한 궁금증에서 출발했다.

김상소는 데이터가 범람하는 상황에서 인지 영역의 확대를 확인하고 정보와 가설의 흐릿해진 경계 속에 형식과 태도로 이야기를 전달한다.

신디하는 자연의 유기적인 세계를 우드 와이드 웹(wood wide web)을 통해 들여다보고 기묘한 생명력을 분리된 생태계로 제시한다.asdf

이천국은 디지털 매체의 이미지를 현실로 끌어오는 과정에 집중하고 촉각적인 매체로 물질을 재구성한다.

Joy는 감각하고 경험할 수는 소재들을 기록하고 대상의 단서를 점층적으로 구체화하며 비선형적 서사를 통해 시대의 순간을 탐구한다.

이번 전시를 통해 전략에 맞게 다양한 분야에서 유용한 정보를 어떻게 추출하는지, 신중하게 생성된 이미지는 어떻게 움직이고 있는지, 이와 동반한 문제들을 어떻게 설명하고 있는지를 고민해 보는 자리가 되었으면 좋겠다. 부디 새로운 포탈을 찾게 되어 기분 좋은 떨림과 함께 자유롭게 떠날 수 있기를 기대해본다.
