Una Singular Reunión: A Singular Gathering
Marcelo Suaznabar invites us into the world of surrealism and imagination. This Bolivian artist, drawing from childhood memories of churches and museums, blends religious themes with elements of nature in his works. In this exhibition, *Una Singular Reunión*, Marcelo leads us into a new dimension through unconscious dialogues and dreamlike scenes.
One of the exhibited pieces, “Una inusual reunion,” brings together surreal creatures and figures in a space that exudes a peculiar atmosphere. Creatures with two faces and horns, figures wearing gas masks, and spotted animals all offer visitors an experience that transcends the boundaries between reality and imagination. This bizarre combination reflects Marcelo’s unique imagination and artistic vision.
*Una Singular Reunión*, or “A Singular Gathering,” metaphorically explores the crisis between the environment and the human world. The transformed animals and strange figures in Marcelo’s works symbolize the nature altered and destroyed by human activities. His works often reveal contemporary societal issues in peculiar ways, warning about the fragility of nature and human greed.
Marcelo’s paintings explore the complex relationship between nature and humanity. The “Apocalipsis” series expresses contemporary pessimism about environmental destruction, while the “Altiplano Mágico” series depicts an ideal world that dreams of harmony with nature. His works often convey messages to the subconscious through symbols like deformed animals, clocks, cubes, and eggs with barcodes.
This exhibition encourages us to view the overlooked aspects of everyday life from a new perspective. Through Marcelo’s works, we embark on a journey that transcends the boundaries between reality and imagination.
_ A Composition that Reverses the Real World
Marcelo Suaznabar derives from the inexpressible, the things that only exist in imagination, or those that seem non-existent yet are present. He leads us into unconscious conversations, leaving whispers we do not want to hear as evidence in our environment. He presents stories we might experience unknowingly in reverse.
Through sharp observation of his surroundings and learning artistic skills, one might think Automatisme lacks rules or theoretical legitimacy, but art protects images that transcend such rules. Born in Oruro, this Bolivian artist took his first steps as an artist with basic art education and tools provided by his photographer uncle. “As a child, my uncle told me that constant daily work would improve my skills. He gave me a box of oil paints he had brought from Belgium, saying I could use it when I was ready. His biggest teaching was to observe my surroundings well and fearlessly transfer that onto paper. He made it clear that patience and discipline are important tools for growth,” Marcelo recalls.
Examining his works reveals an astonishing level of imagination and expression of the relationship between nature and humanity. His paintings draw unconventional lines, pleasing viewers with seemingly illogical strokes. The prominent surrealism in his works reorganizes our perspectives and invites us to interpret each detail. “Surrealism acts as a function to free thoughts and vividly express them in art. It’s not about drawing dreams but simply creating surreal forms as products of imagination,” he explains.
Marcelo’s works narrate more than what meets the eye using elements of nature. His paintings form a new reality, challenging clear vision by transcending the mind’s assumptions. “There are repetitive elements in my paintings representing the mixture of modernity. The flat, barren surfaces remind of the origins of the Bolivian Altiplano, while abstract backgrounds or invented forms can be interpreted as transformations. Deformed animals, clocks, cubes, and eggs with barcodes all try to convey something to the subconscious,” he explains.
Marcelo’s art serves as a social outcry, discussing human existence through forms that seem non-existent. The pleasant irony in his works invites viewers to lose themselves in the purpose of viewing and attentively observe each detail of his paintings.

_ 현실 세계를 뒤집은 구성
말할 수 없는 것, 상상 속에서만 존재하는 것, 혹은 존재하지 않는 것 같지만 존재하는 것에서 비롯됩니다. Marcelo Suaznabar는 무의식적인 대화를 이끌어내며, 우리가 듣고 싶지 않은 속삭임들을 우리의 환경 속에 증거로 남깁니다. 그는 우리가 자각하지 못한 채 경험할 수 있는 이야기들을 역방향으로 제시합니다.
자신의 환경에 대한 예리한 관찰과 예술적 기술 학습을 통해, Automatisme(오토마티즘)이 규칙이나 이론적 정당성을 결여하고 있다고 생각할 수도 있지만, 예술은 이러한 규칙을 초월한 이미지를 보호합니다. Oruro에서 태어난 이 볼리비아 예술가는 어린 시절을 함께한 사진작가 삼촌에게 기본적인 예술 교육과 도구를 제공받아 예술가로서의 첫 발을 내디뎠습니다. “어렸을 때, 삼촌은 매일 꾸준히 작업해야 실력이 향상된다고 말씀하셨습니다. 벨기에에서 사온 유화 물감 상자를 주시며, 준비가 되었을 때 사용할 수 있을 것이라고 하셨죠. 삼촌의 가장 큰 가르침은 주변을 잘 관찰하고 두려움 없이 그것을 종이에 옮기는 것이었습니다. 인내와 규율이 성장의 중요한 도구라는 것을 분명히 해주셨습니다.”라고 Marcelo는 회상합니다.
그의 작품을 살펴보면, 상상력과 자연과 인간 사이의 관계가 놀라운 수준으로 표현된 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 그의 그림은 비전통적인 선을 그리며, 논리가 없는 듯 보이는 선을 통해 보는 이의 시선을 즐겁게 합니다. 그의 작품에서 뚜렷하게 드러나는 초현실주의는 우리를 새로운 방식으로 재정비하고, 각 세부 사항을 해석하도록 초대합니다. “초현실주의는 생각을 자유롭게 하고 그것을 예술로 생동감 있게 표현하는 구실로 작동합니다. 꿈을 그리는 것이 아니라, 단순히 상상의 산물로 초현실적 형태를 만들어냅니다.”라고 그는 설명합니다.
Marcelo의 작품은 자연의 모든 요소를 이용해 보이는 것 이상의 이야기를 전합니다. 그의 그림은 새로운 현실을 형성하며, 이 볼리비아 예술가는 마음의 추측을 초월하고, 이를 가지고 놀며 명확한 시각에 도전합니다. “나의 그림에는 현대의 혼합물들을 나타내는 반복적인 요소들이 있습니다. 평평하고 불모의 표면은 볼리비아 altiplano(알티플라노)의 기원을 상기시키고, 추상적인 배경이나 발명된 형태는 변형으로 해석될 수 있습니다. 변형된 동물들, 시계, 큐브, 바코드를 가진 알 등은 모두 무의식에 무언가를 전달하려고 합니다.”라고 그는 설명합니다.
