THEO is pleased to announce the opening of our second exhibition space Lab201, and Hyojun Kim’s solo exhibition 『The Orbit』 as it’s first exhibition.

“Beginning of The Orbit”

Even when we see and experience the same object or information, we form different interpretations and perceptions based on our personal experiences and backgrounds, cognitive differences, values and beliefs, as well as our emotional state at that moment. In this way, rather than a mechanical, one-size-fits-all answer, individuals live a life of diverse perceptions that reflect their personal inclinations depending on the events that affect them in each moment.

Hyojun KIM’s work explores the differences and changes in perception between various individuals through visual information. His early works focused on expressing individual preferences and emotions, but as he experienced the process of reinterpreting his works differently from the original intentions of the viewers due to the differences in their experiences and perceptions, he continued his exploration of visual boundaries by questioning the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, making the forms of objects clearer while simultaneously reducing their figurativeness.

Exhibition, “The Orbit,” refers to the category of objects that an image can belong to, the sphere of influence, or the ‘grain’ shape, such as the orbits that can be seen in the works. In other words, figurative grains gather together to represent abstract objects, and the artist’s works are arranged in the exhibition space to witness the phenomenon of organic interaction with each other, affecting the viewer’s interpretation and perception. The artist, who has experimented with the boundaries of figuration and abstraction in a single work, has attempted to realize the formation of a trajectory of energy generated through the exhibition.

The exhibition, in which both those who move out of the orbit and those who stay within it will coexist, will be a place where new emotions and interpretations are harmoniously shared from various perspectives, rather than inferring a specific answer. Although [Orbit] is a concept with an ambiguous starting point, this exhibition will be the starting point of a spatial orbit involving a variety of artists with different personalities in the new exhibition space of THEO, which is “Lab 201”.

THEO는 Lab201의 개관전으로 김효준 작가의 개인전 『The Orbit』을 2023년 9월 16일부터 10월 6일까지 개최합니다.

“궤도의 시작점”

우리는 동일한 사물이나 정보를 눈으로 보고 경험할 때도 각자의 개인적인 경험과 배경, 인지적 차이, 가치관과 신념뿐 아니라 그 순간의 감정적 상태에 따라 서로 다른 해석과 인식을 형성하게 된다. 이처럼 개인은 기계적이고 일률적인 정답보다는 매 순간 자신에게 영향을 주는  어떠한 사건에 따라 개인적인 성향이 반영된 다양한 인식의 삶을 살아가고 있는 것이다.

김효준 작가는 시각 정보를 통해 받아들이게 되는 다양한 개인 간의 인식의 차이와 변화에 대해 연구한다. 작가의 초기작은 개인의 선호도와 감정을 표현하는 데 중점을 두었으나, 관람자들의 다양한 개인의 경험과 인식의 차이로 인해 발생되는 저마다의 해석들이 자신의 작업이 가진 본래의 의도와는 다르게 재해석되는 과정을 경험하며 작가는 구상과 추상의 경계에 대한 의문을 가지고 대상의 형태를 더욱 분명하게 나타내면서 동시에 구상성을 덜어내는 작업을 통해 시각적 경계에 대한 탐구를 이어 나가고 있다.

이번 전시 『The Orbit』이라는 전시명은 이미지가 속할 수 있는 대상의 범주나 영향이 미치는 영향권, 혹은 작품에서 볼 수 있는 궤도와 같은 ‘결’ 모양을 의미하고 있다. 즉, 구상적인 결들이 모여 추상적인 대상을 나타내고, 작가의 작품들이 전시 공간에 비치되어 서로 유기적인 상호작용을 통해 감상자의 해석과 인식에 영향을 끼치는 현상을 목도한다. 이는 단일 작업에서 구상과 추상의 경계에 대해 실험했던 작가가, 전시를 통해 발생되는 에너지의 궤도를 형성하는 것을 구현하려 한 것이다.

작가가 의도적으로 설치한 궤도 밖으로 나아가는 사람과 궤도 안에 머무는 사람 모두가 공존하게 될 이번 전시는 특정된 답을 유추하는 것이 아닌 다양한 관점에서 새로운 감정과 해석을 조화롭게 나누는 전시의 장이 될 것이다. [Orbit]은 그 시작점이 모호한 개념이지만, THEO의 Lab201에서 펼쳐지는 이번 개관 전시는 서로 다른 개성의 다양한 작가들이 참여하는 공간적 궤도의 시작점이 될 것이다.
