Alice Dalton Brown, born in Danville, Pennsylvania in 1939 and raised in Ithaca, New York, pursued her studies in language and literature in France and later attended Cornell University and Oberlin College for liberal arts. After graduating in 1962 from Oberlin with a BA in studio art, she returned with her husband to live in rural upstate New York. There, she explored various artistic styles, studied Joseph Albers’ color theories, and balanced her creative endeavors with raising a family. It was during this period that she began developing her lifelong work of utilizing the observed world, photographs, and memory to create expressive images that reflect her ideas.

After relocating to New York City in 1970, her work found a wider audience and has since been exhibited internationally, with over 30 solo exhibitions held in New York City, various locations across the United States and abroad, including a recent exhibition in Seoul, South Korea. Her artwork can be found in numerous private, public, and corporate collections, including the American Express Corporation, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
